The United States prepares to develop geothermal energy

Is geothermal energy about to enjoy its heyday in the United States? That’s what the new roadmap published by the US Department of Energy on March 28 suggests. According to this document, the country’s geothermal capacity should increase 20-fold to supply 90 gigawatts by 2050, or 10% of electricity (compared with less than 1% today). 74 million dollars will be allocated to 7 pilot projects aimed at developing innovative geothermal systems to power 65 million American homes. According to Energy Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm, the latest report on accelerating clean energy “shows theenormous potential of geothermal energy“. With strong public-private partnerships, she says, it would be possible to “lower the costs of this technology to expand access to cleaner, more reliable energy for communities across the country”.
